Jersey shore yeshiva opens doors

After more than a year of preparation, the Yeshiva at the Jersey Shore officially opened its doors Sept. 5. Located in the Ruth Hyman Jewish Community Center in Deal, this Modern Orthodox day school welcomed four first-graders, and plans are under way for the yeshiva to expand next September to a second and perhaps a third grade.

The yeshiva concept had its genesis among members of Congregation Brothers of Israel in Elberon. As yeshiva president Sydney Lekach explains, “We had many people inquire about moving to the shore and joining the shul. However, many of them would not consider us if their children could not attend a Modern Orthodox Ashkenazi day school. It was at that point that we knew what we had to do, namely, create the best day school that we possibly could.”

“It is wonderful to see the children laughing, singing, and enjoying as they learn,” said head of school Rabbi Elie Tuchman. “Our caring and dynamic teachers have created an environment of fun and excitement about learning, while stimulating and challenging each child to grow at his or her own pace.”

Tuchman came to the yeshiva after leading a school in Oakland, Calif., through a period of significant growth, taking it from a small kindergarten-to-third-grade startup to a nationally recognized school going up to eighth grade. He chose to head this school, he said, because “there is nothing more exciting than starting a brand new school where you are free to implement the latest state-of-the-art techniques to foster and improve student learning.”

While the formal admissions process does not begin until November, “it isn’t necessary for interested families to wait until then to find out about the school,” Tuchman said. “I have already begun to meet with parents of potential students for next year.”
