Ready for summer school? The Jewish Learning Center of Monmouth County is once again offering a free two-week program in Torah, Hebrew, and Jewish history.
Beginning Monday, Aug. 3, the S.E.E.D. (Summer Education Enrichment & Development) program, which caters mostly to men, will feature classes in Kabala, the Prophets, the Five Books of Moses, and Jewish philosophy and law.
The program is run through Torah Umesorah, the National Society for Hebrew Day Schools.
Torah Umesorah provides instructors, chiefly yeshiva students, who travel to Monmouth and are put up by local families.
“These are volunteers who give up their summer vacations to share their knowledge with the Jewish community,” said center director Rabbi Chaim Veshnefsky. “They learn with people in the morning and evening. We put them up and feed them.”
Veshnefsky said hundreds of community residents from a variety of backgrounds have taken classes in the seven years or so the program has been offered.
“There is no level of learning required,” said Veshnefsky. “Someone who doesn’t know any Hebrew and would like to learn is as welcome as someone with a strong background in Talmud or Torah. This is perfect for someone like a teacher who has a little more time in the summer to study in a serious way.”
The program offers classes and individualized learning to teens, youths, and adults; classes for women — taught by a woman sent by Torah Umesorah — are held only on Shabbat afternoons. Donations are accepted to cover expenses.
The learning center also offers courses for men, women, and children throughout the year.
