New Jersey Jewish News Innovative Montclair rabbi leaves congregation for Midwest
Rabbi Rachel Gartner, who, as assistant rabbi at Bnai Keshet in Montclair brought a series of innovations to the synagogue, stepped down from her post as of July 15. Gartner is moving with her husband, David, to Indiana, where he will be a professor of creative writing at Earlham College in Richmond. During her three-year tenure at the Reconstructionist synagogue, Gartner championed a number of groundbreaking programs including a monthly girls Rosh Hodesh group for study and reflection, musical Friday night services inspired by her experience as a rabbinic fellow at Manhattans Congregation Bnai Jeshurun, Bnai Keshets participation in the STAR synagogue renewal program, and the expansion of family education. Rabbi Elliott Tepperman said many of the activities she initiated will continue. While people are very sad to see her leave I as much as anyone because we are such good friends this is a strong congregation and will continue to be that, said Tepperman. Although unexpected, and not the congregations choice, Gartners departure may be a blessing in disguise. We were already engaged in some strategic planning, Tepperman said. This opens a number of opportunities for us. In her place, the synagogue has engaged two rabbinic interns from the Reconstructionist Rabbinical College for 2006-07: Joshua Vander Velde and Lori Schneide. Vander Velde, entering his first year at RRC, will serve the congregation for one three-day weekend per month. He will focus on social justice issues in addition to conducting Shabbat and childrens services. Schneide, entering her second year of studies at the college, will join the congregation for two three-day weekends per month; she will have a more traditional internship, including teaching adult education courses and running family services. Gartner could not be reached for comment. Comment | | | |
