The Jewish Federation of Central New Jersey joined a national effort to aid Sderot, the Israeli town reeling under the bombardment of Kassam rockets hurled by Palestinian militants in nearby Gaza.

Through an allocation from its Israel Emergency Campaign, the federation is providing "at least $150,000 in emergency funding to the Sderot area over a three-year period," according to executive vice president, Stanley Stone.

"The funds are now being transferred," he said.

They are part of a relief effort being coordinated by the Jewish Agency for Israel to help the embattled region outside Gaza cope with two recent deaths from rocket attacks that also damaged much property and traumatized many of its 22,000 residents.

"We are seriously looking at funding a number of projects geared toward the Sderot area," said Stone. "We will have a final decision next week."
