The Ocean Township branch of the Monmouth County Library has been awarded a $2,500 grant that will be used to create a reading and discussion series about Jewish literature.

The grant was awarded to the library in April by Nextbook Inc., a nonprofit organization that promotes Jewish arts and literature, and the American Library Association Public Programs Office.

The grant is designed to provide funding for programs that support a scholar-led, theme-based approach to contemporary and classic Jewish literature, according to Judi Tolchin, the county library's public relations librarian.

In accordance with the grant outline, the Ocean Township branch will present Your Heart's Desire: Sex and Love in Jewish Literature, a five-part series that will focus on five works of modern fiction (see sidebar).

Each discussion will begin at 7 p.m.; the series is free and open to the public.

The Ocean Township chapter of Hadassah will assist the library in publicizing the series and will serve as a "community partner," said Judith Boim, librarian at the county's Ocean Township branch.

The library chose the Your Heart's Desire theme when it applied for the grant in November 2006, Boim said. Each discussion will focus on the author's background and place in literature, and the content and central themes of the books, she added.

"We chose books that we think will appeal to men and women," Boim said. "The books themselves will ensure that we get a diverse group."

Additional information about the five-part series is available from the Ocean Township library office at 732-531-5092.
