A 12-year-old North Brunswick boy with dyslexia wants other young people to share the joy he has discovered through reading.
For his upcoming bar mitzva at Temple B’nai Shalom in East Brunswick, Ryan Moore is helping PSE&G Specialized Children’s Hospital in New Brunswick stock a children’s library.
“I wanted to help them because they helped me,” said Ryan, who received occupational therapy at the hospital’s Hamilton facility from 2004 to 2007. “When I heard that Children’s Specialized Hospital was going to create a new facility in New Brunswick I wanted to help. I was diagnosed with dyslexia in June 2006 and only recently learned to enjoy reading books. Seeing how much I can learn from books, I want to be able to help others share in the fun.”
The New Brunswick hospital opened last year and operates out of Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital.
Ryan, who will become a bar mitzva on March 14, 2009, is the son of Mark and Lillian Moore. He is conducting a book drive at locations throughout the area.
In partnership with the North Brunswick Barnes & Noble, a free book drive event featuring Tracey West, author of the Pokemon chapter books series, will be held May 12. West, who will read from and autograph her books, agreed to donate her time, according to Lillian Moore.
B’nai Shalom members will also be volunteer readers, and an experienced gamer will be on hand to answer questions about the Diamond and Pearl DS Pokemon video games.
Ryan is a sixth-grader at the Newgrange School in Hamilton, for students with learning disabilities and dyslexia.
The store will have a basket where those attending can buy and donate books requested by the hospital, said Miriam Libove, the store’s community relations manager. Additionally, those attending will be able to present vouchers available that day and at various locations throughout the area. A percentage of each voucher sale will be put on a gift card that the hospital will turn over to Ryan to buy additional books.
“At the end of the day we will total out the number of sales generated and the higher the sales, the higher the percentage of our contribution will be,” said Libove.
Libove said Ryan’s project dovetailed nicely with the store’s goals.
“The mission of Barnes & Noble is to reach out to literacy organizations and arts and education institutions on literacy projects,” said Libove. “Ryan is interested in building a library, which is in line with our mission. We’ve worked with many schools and I’m interested in reaching out to our area yeshivot and day schools on a literacy project.”
Ryan has so far collected 75 books. Although he has no set goal, he said, “I hope it will be a lot.”
Collections will continue through Dec. 1. On Dec. 18 he will present his collection to hospital president Amy Mansue during a ceremony.
