Dozens of Rutgers Hillel members sacrificed their hair on March 30 to help cancer-stricken children.
They either shaved their heads or cut off their long locks during a “buzz-athon” that has so far raised $1,580, with donations still coming in, for the Embrace Kids Foundation, a New Brunswick-based organization that supports children with cancer and their families statewide and funds research initiatives. The money was raised through sponsorship of participants.
The shorn tresses have been donated to Chai Lifeline, an international organization with New Jersey offices in Lakewood that helps children suffering long-term illness. The hair will be used for wigs for children who are undergoing chemotherapy.

At the event, held outside the Rutgers Student Center in New Brunswick, 23 women cut their long hair while 15 men and one woman “buzzed” their heads.
The event was sponsored by Hillel, Rutgers University Dance Marathon, Chai Lifeline, and Salon DP LaRana.
The program was run through the Buzzing for Change Foundation, formed in 2006 by George Washington University students. Donations are still being accepted on-line.
