Isidore Balaban

Isidore “Ike” Balaban, 83, of Monroe Township died Jan. 17, 2012. Born and raised in Brooklyn, he lived there until moving to Clearbrook in Monroe Township in 1990.

Mr. Balaban had a long career as a court clerk for the New York State Supreme Court-Kings County before retiring in July 1990.

He was an active member of Congregation Beth Israel in Brooklyn and the Knights of Pythias-Lodge #570 and was named Pythian of the Year in 1990. He was president of the East Flatbush Civic Association for many years and a member of Local #177 — Special Officers and Guards Union.

Mr. Balaban had an avid interest in politics, current events, and Jewish affairs and was philanthropic, especially in regard to supporting the State of Israel, Holocaust education, and numerous Jewish organizations. He was also a passionate fan of his sports teams, including the New York Mets, Giants, Jets, Rangers, and Knicks, and Penn State football.

He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Phyllis; two sons, Alan and Mark, both of East Windsor; and five grandchildren.

Services were held Jan. 20 with arrangements by Mount Sinai Memorial Chapels, East Brunswick. Memorial donations may be made to the Leukemia/Lymphoma Society of America, Cranford; or Princeton Hospice, c/o Medical Center of Princeton Foundation.
