Jews and Rock ‘n’ Roll

Sunday, February 12 at 10:00 AM
Leon & Toby Cooperman JCC (rented space), 760 Northfield Ave., West Orange, NJ (Map)
Category: Families, Learning, Lectures, Music, Seniors, Singles

From doo wop’s earliest harmonies to punk’s anti-melodic anthems to today’s eclectic mix, Jews have played an integral role in rock ‘n’ roll’s development. Join rock and pop culture maven and Beatles expert Susan Ryan for a rousing session on Jewish disc jockeys, promoters, managers, songwriters and performers and their contributions to the music that’s shaped three generations. Whether you’re a hard-core fan or a mere music lover, you’ll tap your feet, sing along and leave this program with a new appreciation for the Jews who’ve made this music their own!

Hosted by progressive Jewish writer and scholar Bennett Muraskin, this free monthly session of the Jewish Cultural School & Society’s (JCSS) adult education series is open to all.

Metropolitan Klezmer

Sunday, March 18 at 4:00 PM
Count Basie Theatre, 99 Monmouth St, Red Bank, NJ (Map)
Category: Music

Originally a musical genre of the Ashkenazi (Eastern European) Jews, Klezmer consisted of dance and instrumental tunes for weddings and celebrations. It expanded to include Jazz after arriving in the US circa 1880-1920, and again through successive generations to include the repertoires of Post-War and Soviet immigrants. The eight exceptional musicians of Metropolitan Klezmer’s inspired interpretations of Klezmer classics and their own originals bring an exuberance to Yiddish music worldwide, including wedding dances, folk tunes, Turkish- and Arabic-tinged traditionals, Hungarian prayer melodies, labor protest hymns, Second Avenue swing classics, and vintage Yiddish film soundtrack tangos and love ballads. They’ve played all the NYC venues, appeared on CNN, and Jewish Week gave their latest CD, Traveling Show (2007), five stars. Featuring Ismail Butera (accordion), Pam Fleming (trumpet, flugelhorn, kudu), Melissa Fogarty (soprano), Dave Hofstra (bass, tuba), Debra Kreisberg (clarinet, sax), Reut Regev (trombone), Eve Sicular (drums, bandleader), and Michael Hess (multi-instrumentalist).
